January 2025 Paintings

This month was all about color and experimentation.

These landscapes were all a learning experiment in techniques. Across the Bay at Sunset was done in various acrylic markers. Some were bullet points, others were brush tips painted on a canvas board. I wanted to convey the shimmering of the water and twinkling lights of the city across the water. I used my fingers to mix the paints together and did a lot of layering. The layering was easy since acrylic doesn’t reactivate with water, but the mixing was a bit tricky.

Forest View in watercolor gouache was admitally frustrating to complete. The paints had dried out so needed reactivation and lots of lots of stirring for the paint to get creamy and soft again. I also had to experiment with which brushes to use. What I learned is that I need more practice with this medium.

I do like how Forest View turned out. However, I think I need a new paint pallet with fresh paint which would make the experience better. But… I am working on another painting for next month with this same pallet. The matte paint is just so enticing.

The last painting was done in one of my favorite watercolor brush makers by Kuretake. This was a rediscovering of the markers and remembering of the techniques for blending. Mountain Valley Sunset was inspired by a photo that one of my friends took outside her house. The sunset and clouds were spectacular and I wanted to capture it.

With all of these paintings, I had to put them down for a day or so then re-evaluate them to see if they’re trash or if I like them. I like them, but I think my favorite is Forest View.
